The Economy of Francesco Foundation invites scholars, researchers and practitioners to submit abstracts for its upcoming academic conference, “At the Roots of Economic Ethics”, to be held at the Istituto Serafico in Assisi (Italy).
Conference focus: In marking the 800th anniversary of Saint Francis of Assisi’s death, the conference will explore how the Franciscan ideals of fraternity, care for creation and solidarity can inspire economic thought, policy and practice. Dialogue will span the ethical, spiritual, ecological and social dimensions of economic life, including the dignity of the vulnerable, the Earth and all creatures. Confirmed keynote speakers include: Helen Alford, Giacomo Todeschini and Luigino Bruni. Response is awaited from others.

Franciscan perspectives on economic theory, policy and practice
Ethical, spiritual, ecological and moral dimensions of economic life
Historical and contemporary interpretations of Franciscan-inspired economics
Interdisciplinary links between Franciscan thought and philosophy, theology, social and natural sciences
Inclusion, disability, and the economy of care: new paradigms of human and social flourishing
Implementation of Franciscan principles in modern economic systems and institutions
The relational economy: fraternity with the poor, with the Earth, and with all creatures
Franciscan influences within Catholic Social Teaching and global justice and peace movements
Global and regional economic dynamics and geopolitical instabilities viewed through a Franciscan-inspired lens
Cultural and contextual reinterpretations of Franciscan-inspired economics in regions where Franciscan presence is limited
Pre-conference workshop
A dedicated workshop is scheduled for 7 May for researchers affiliated with the Economy of Francesco Academy; others may attend as observers.
Submission guidelines
Send a short curriculum vitae and an abstract (max 200 words) outlining your research question, methodology and relevance to the conference themes, by 28 January to: scientificboard@francescoeconomy.org
Indicate in your submission whether you wish to participate in the pre-conference workshop.
Format & financial support
The conference will take place primarily in person in Assisi, with a hybrid option for some sessions. Limited financial support may be available for participants, subject to funds.
