The fourth Balbriggan “Our Nature” Festival took place on Saturday 16th May. It was a fantastic community afternoon. Sponsored by the Balbriggan Tidy Towns Association and Fingal County Council, this annual event continues to strengthen the bond between locals and their environment through hands-on learning and connection.
Community Growth & Practical Conservation
The true heart of the festival is its people and after four years, that community spirit is stronger than ever. Despite some truly dreadful weather trying to dampen the mood, the festival went ahead with great energy.
The weekend welcomed a wonderful mix of familiar faces and new volunteers who showed up for the first time. Together, everyone rolled up their sleeves for a major hands-on achievement: building a community dead hedge. This practical project created an instant, natural habitat for local wildlife, proving that even a rainy day can generate life and positive action when a community works as one.
Food, Learning, and Invaluable Insights
The festival schedule offered a rich mix of community connection and deep environmental reflection:
EcoBites Workshop: Held at The Warehouse, this session proved that a healthy planet starts right on our plates.
The Polytunnel Picnic: Moving over to Bremore Park, families gathered to dig into the essentials of planting, composting, and nurturing biodiversity.
The Big Picture: Renowned author and environmental commentator John Gibbons’ lecture left a lasting impact. Many walked away with copies of his thought-provoking book, “The Lie of the Land”, ready to carry those crucial insights into their holiday reading.
Steps Along the Shore
The festival beautifully concluded at the historic Martello Tower for a guided beach walk with Patrick Veale. Walking along the coast together provided a perfect, reflective space to discuss the local coastline, clear the head and appreciate the natural beauty we are all called to safeguard.
A Promise for Next Year
Post event, the organizers felt that every year brings something new. While the weather presented some challenges, the weekend proved that Balbriggan has a deep, enduring hunger for these vital conversations and practical actions. They are already looking toward the 5th festival next year with a vision to be even better prepared for whatever the elements throw at them. To every volunteer who showed up, worked hard, and braved the rain: thank you. You showed that when it comes to protecting our common home, Balbriggan is ready to act!
