I am at the General Assembly of the Work of Mary. And I am not the only religious present. There are also priests, women religious, bishops, a cardinal. There are members of seven different Churches and of other religions as well. With joy I meet again the young Buddhist who, at the Genfest, paid homage to John Paul II by kneeling before him. We later met in Thailand… and today here he is! There is also the Hindu professor whom I met several times in India… and the one representing the Muslims…
I am at the General Assembly of the Work of Mary. I even have the right to vote. I will therefore contribute to the election of the president, the co-president, the members of the council… The whole world is represented. Only those who should have come from the Middle East are missing, where the war has grounded the flights. But how is such a heterogeneous representation possible — and I myself having the right to vote?
It is truly a sign of the ecclesial nature and of the great openness of the Movement, which presents itself as a people of many vocations, multifaceted, rich in so many expressions. A mirror and a prophecy of the Church. So much diversity and so much unity.
The challenge is to remain at that level even when the issues become heated and opinions differ, when procedures feel heavy… Will we succeed? It is a real assembly, with real people. Each person steps forward sincerely. It is a risk. We will succeed.
