On 28th  January 2026 the world marks the first International Day of Peaceful Coexistence, a new United Nations observance inviting all nations, communities, and individuals to deepen their commitment to living together in peace, understanding, and mutual respect. This day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in March 2025 through resolution A/RES/79/269, recognizing that peace is not simply the absence of conflict but the active cultivation of tolerance, respect for diversity, and human dignity in every sphere of life.

What Is the International Day of Peaceful Coexistence?

Peaceful coexistence celebrates the human capacity to share life together — across differences of culture, religion, language, and worldview — while upholding justice and human rights. It emerges from a long history of global reflection on peace, including the Culture of Peace initiatives of the late 20th century and long-standing United Nations commitments to education, tolerance, and dialogue.

The resolution invites member states, civil society, faith communities, educators, the private sector and media to observe the day with activities that promote inclusion, understanding, and solidarity. At its core, the Day is a call to action: peace must be practiced daily — in schools, workplaces, neighbourhoods and international relations alike.

Youth and the Pact for the Future — A Shared Commitment

In a world challenged by conflict, polarization, and mistrust, young people play a crucial role in shaping a more peaceful future. Youth for a United World, the youth movement rooted in the Focolare Movement, has recently published its latest report, Together to Care: for our human family and our common home, reaffirming its commitment to the Pact for the Future — a visionary framework adopted by the United Nations that underscores sustainability, justice, intergenerational solidarity, and peace. This publication articulates how young people around the globe are living out these principles — not as abstract ideals, but as concrete commitments to human dignity, care for creation and a united world. It reflects the conviction that peaceful coexistence is not only about preventing conflict but about nurturing relationships rooted in fraternity and mutual responsibility.

Harmony with Focolare’s Spiritual Vision

The goals of the International Day of Peaceful Coexistence resonate deeply with the Focolare Movement’s spirituality of unity — a lived commitment to seeing every human being as a brother or sister and pursuing social transformation through dialogue, encounter and shared action. The Youth for a United World’s contribution to the Pact for the Future mirrors this vision with its emphasis on universal fraternity, solidarity with the vulnerable and care for our common home. Focolare’s approach — centred on the Golden Rule and the ideal of “that all may be one” — consistently underlines that peace and coexistence flourish not through power or coercion but through relationships of trust, mutual respect and lived commitment to the common good.
