The International Writing Group and the Order Commission of the World Council of Churches met in Maynooth this week
Christian Churches in Ireland have been invited to choose the theme and compile the resources for the annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity in January 2027. During this past week, from 31 August to 5 September, an International Writing Group comprising of representatives of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity and the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches met in the Columba Centre of Saint Patrick’s College, Maynooth, with members of a Writing Group in Ireland, established by the Irish Bishops’ Conference and the Irish Council of Churches.
The Writing Group in Ireland has been working on possible themes and resources for several months and the fruits of their work were deliberated upon and developed during the course of the week. Once finalised, the theme and resources will be published formally in early 2026.
The annual week of prayer is observed in the northern hemisphere from 18 to 25 January each year and different countries are chosen each year to provide the theme and to offer a series of reflections and resources for worship as well as providing an introduction to the theme and its context.
