In her recent visit to the United States, Margaret Karram, President of the Focolare Movement, emphasized the urgent need for global peace and reconciliation. Addressing the Sustainable Peace Networks Conference in Maryland, she highlighted the importance of unity and dialogue, especially in the face of violence and division. Margaret’s personal background as a Palestinian Catholic from Haifa adds depth to her commitment to fostering understanding among diverse communities.
Echoing Chiara Lubich’s phrase, “No one must pass us by in vain,” Margaret invited each person to recognize and respond to others with concrete love. Her concluding exhortation was clear: we must live for universal fraternity—making daily choices that build unity and peace: “Every person that passes by us is a gift from God. Every encounter with another person has to change our lives somehow. We’re not living only for ourselves; if we don’t help others and change others’ lives, we have failed in our mission. Jesus wants us to be united—to be holy, but not to be holy alone.”
